Royal visit to Trinity College

The King and Queen of the Netherlands visited Trinity College Dublin on Thursday June 13 as part of their State visit to Ireland. I had the privilege to show them some of the highlights of the Fagel Collection.

During their visit, the King and Queen visited Trinity’s Long Room situated in the College’s 18th century Old Library building which is home to precious research collections and manuscripts, most famous of which is the Book of Kells. The ninth century gospel manuscript is famous throughout the world for its beautifully intricate decoration and is representative of Ireland as a seat of art and learning.

Some of the highlights of the Fagel Collection were put on display in the Henry Jones Room. Included were a copy of one of the editions of the Plakkaat van Verlatinghe, that is the Dutch declaration of independence from 1581 (Fag.H.3.8:3), an 18th century commemorative volume containing documents relating to the Union of Utrecht of 1579 (Fag.I.4.26), Commelin’s Horti medici Amstelodamensis from 1697, beautifully coloured, heightened with gold and bound in a magnificent binding by the First Stadholder Bindery (Fag.GG.3.16) and the so-called travel journal of Simon van der Stel.
